Vlad
You were both very lucky & very unfortunate. I assumed that all moulded plastic kayaks or indeed anything that is designed to carry someone safely on the water, should & would be water tested. Obviously in this situation some flares may have been useful to you, but I guess that on a lake or river you cannot image the same problems can occur as on the sea, or that help would not be easily raised. A massive lesson for everyone of us here to learn from. Glad you lived to tell the tale.

Now, update on the kayak. Peter the Joel's Water sports shop owner could not find a definite cause for the huge intake of water into the hull. He found what could be a small leak of the water from inside of the yak out, from the drainage plug but he is not sure if the water can leak in from there. So, the kayak will be sent back to Avoncraft for further inspection and tests. They will change the drainage plug and seal it. They will make the small holes for the rudder strings more watertight and will test the yak in the water. They did not say anything about replacing the kayak. I will wait and see what the final outcome will be before deciding what to do.
This means I do not have to go to the shop on the weekend and YES, AT THE END I WILL COME TO THE VHF RADIO COURSE ON SATURDAY AND THE MEET ON SUNDAY AFTER ALL! ZEBRA, I will have to take you on you offer to provide me wit one of your spare kayaks for the meet. I will be most grateful if you do! Thanks!

Avoncraft did not bother to take and inspect the kayak. They Left peter to deal with it. He did not find a definite cause for the leak. He is going to seal the drainage hole with silicone and will insert tubes in the holes for the rudder cords. After that I am expected to take the kayak back and Avoncraft will consider the problem solved.

Thats really poor customer service! Its supposed to be fit for purpose and it clearly isn't, get a replacement or your money back.

Vlad Have a look at this: www.johnantell.co.uk/SOGA1979.htmPoints 14 and 48A to 48F seem relevant. I agree with Jimbob, you should 'take advice' on this and start talking to them about solicitors getting involved if need be. Customer service is everything nowadays and a bad reputation can kill a business. If the failure of your yak was due to it being faulty you are not being unreasonable in your request for a replacement or your money back, tel them you do not want it repaired, you want it replaced or money back. Regards Ped (the bloke who took you to the RNLI demo at exmouth )

Hi ped! Nice to here from you mate! I’ve made it; I went sea kayak fishing thanks to NWKF last Sunday!
About the kayak, I decided to take it to the DEMO DAY at MADEFORT next weekend for the guys from Anglers Afloat to have a look at it. If the defect is identified I will have a solid reason to insist for my money back. If it is found to be OK I'll have to use it, because the Avoncraft did not found anything wrong with it. I hope to do the SOT course at Avon beach too. I hope to see you on the water soon!

Hi Vlad.
A while back now Ocean Kayaks were having problems with leaking boats. The problem was around the scupper tubes, small pin holes, fractures. Boats were also being sent out warped.
Ocean were very quick to up thier quality control.
Might be worth putting the boat on a couple of milk crates ( crates near middle of kayak - not at each end ) fill the boat with about 3 inches of water, then look for leaks around the scupper holes.
Im not saying this is the problem, or that there actualy is a problem, but may be worth a look.
Just a thought.

Hi yakity! What you propose was done and no leak from the scupper holes was found. No leak was found apart from behind the drainage tab and it was very slight from inside out. The say this does not mean it will leek from outside in and consider that the boat is OK - so it must’ve been my fault somehow. Anyway, I am taking the kayak to the SOT course at Avon Beach next Sunday, where it will be checked by very experienced kayakers and if there is a problem I hope to be identified.
