Does your licence run out? I did the VHF course and have my licence but it was some years ago, as I find I don't or have not had a need to use it the skills / routine get forgotten. There used to be a video available as a reminder, or I guess you can re-attend the course as a refresher?

Hi All
It's NOT actually illegal to transmit a MAYDAY call. If for instance the skipper took ill and a non licence holder had to make the dreaded call, then it would be perfectly legal. However as previously stated, if you are going to own a VHF radio and use it then you do indeed require a Certificate of Competence from the RYA. Like mentioned it's about VHF knowledge and procedures. The coast guard need to know certain info in a certain order to carry out a successful rescue, so if you’re babbling on in a blind panic, making no sense then that’s where the problem starts. My course cost me £75 and was very informative. It’s well worth it !
