I asked the advice of the RNLI guys at treaddur bay recently during a visit to their station - they recommended carrying the dual night /day smoke/flare which is waterproof and a single costs around £40 but i have seen a pair on the net for £50. They said the mini flares were not really worth risking as a number of ones they have tested failed to go off. I think it was the rnli or sea safety web site where I found a section on flares and videos of how to set them off and what they look like - if I find the link again I will post it here as it was a useful site for advice. I am going to buy a pair of the dual day/night ones and carry one on the kayak and one on my pfd. They recomended setting one off immediately to try to get someones attention and to keep the second one to guide them in - this type have the day and night flares at either end of the stick so if you set the day orange smoke off you woudl still have the flare on the other end to set off if you were unfortunate to still be waiting to be rescued after dark.
