Well done to menaiman and the other 3 students that joined me today to complete the vhf marine short range course. All passed and can now use their vhfs legally, with the knowledge of proper procedures etc. Tutor was great. If anyone else want to do the course she will be running another one in October sometime and I can pass on the email contact address if required via PM.
Nice to meet you Graham for the first time today - look forward to seeing you out in the yak at one of the meets or locally on the island.

The course was great & not too taxing! We also had a brief chat with the coxwain of the Holyhead lifeboat (not part of the course) & his comments on the reliance of mobile phones certainly diswayed any doubts as to the value of using a VHF radio. Good to meet you too Moniar & the other lads, Steve, Dave & Alan. I didn't catch if they are members of this forum. Graham

Thought I'd share a deal I got with "The Marine Warehouse Ltd" on a Icom IC-M31. Just been on the phone to them and they are getting a batch through tomorrow and selling them for £109 plus £5.90 delivery! Also included is a free waterproof case worth £20. If your interested, ask for Helen on 01792 872002. I was planning the IC-33 which is floatable but alot more cash and I'm told it is a good bit bulkier too. ( )

RINK123 - also take a look at the new Standard Horizon handhelds - very good quality and exceptionally aggressively priced. Smallest bulk wise of any handheld, but full 5 watts tx power and you can link an external mic if you want to. About £90. Lithium battery to.

I have just purchased the Standard Horizon HX500e for £82 +vat. Free next day delivery. Looks a nice unit at what seems an excellent price. I had a word with the guy fro SH to make sure it was appropriate for yakking and he confirmed it was, very helpful.
I am not going to be able to do the course ( not easy to do in landlocked Leicestershire)before I go to Aberdaron but I can monitor and use for emergencies.
