My limited knowledge on anchor reels and anchoring...
When I first got the kayak the anchor was set up as already described by a few, with a buoy and floating rope.
I found this method and a reel didn't suit my needs because if I wanted to move out onto a further gulley/ledge or in closer I'd have to haul the floating rope, to get to the dive reel to pay out more warp to get to my gulley. I also found that it made it hard work with the reel hauling line then winding.
I now use what a few others also do and that's a handline frame instead if a reel and no bouy. I just clip my warp in my anchor trolley, drop anchor pay line out then tie it of in the cleat beside me. The frame stays tucked under my leg so it's with me on the kayak at all times.
The frame makes hauling anchor much much easier as you can wind and haul at the same time.
The last point is I don't use a cable tie either. I use a bit of 20lb amnesia to tie the chain to the anchor, much more reliable and breaks every time.
I'll try and add some pics when I remember my login for photobucket.

Hi All, I'm new to the forum and kayak fishing, although slowly becoming addicted to it. I have a relatively small tootega pulse 85 kayak which I originally bought for surfing and playing around on. I've gradually kitted it up with removable fishing gear including an anchor trolly. I have until recently just either been trolling or drift fishing using a drogue to slow the drift down. This has been OK but with the wind speeds around Anglesey where I fish usually quite high, I decided to get a small anchor so I could spend a longer time over productive marks and save myself some paddling.
I have an SMB reel with 150 feet of line, a small bottle to act as a bouy, 1 meter of stainless chain and a 0.7kg anchor. I quickly learned that although ok in shallow water of 25 feet or so the anchor is not really heavy enough for deeper water and I ended up dragging it. It only cost me £5 for the anchor so not too upset, but what weight anchor would you guys recommend?
Many thanks,
John

John often the dragging is caused by not having enough rope out. The general rule is at least three times the depth you are in. That tends to keep a lower angle to the anchor and along with the chain it should help the anchor to dig in.
If it doesn't work for you then try a 1.5kg anchor.

Many thanks Terry. I will give it a go. Hoping to get out at Anglesey in the next couple of weeks if the weather is ok
