I am a complete newbie to this sport. When looking for my first rod and reel what ought i to look for. Some kayak rods appear to be very short is this just for ease or are there other reasons?

Most kayak rods will be in the 6-8ft region,
Basically because that is all you need. Long enough to get the line around the bow and stern if a fish runs that way but not too long as to be cumbersome on a kayak.
The range of rods in this length is tremendous from ultra light rods from 0g-7g right up to 30lbs class rods for hauling big girls out.
It all depends on what you are fish for and where you are going.

Can I add that if you are on a tight budget as i was when starting, after the initial cost of set up, Go outdoors do a great cheap range by Ron Thompson. I got a pair of evo 2's 8foot last year for £9.99 each and they have saved me well so far. And at that price if the inevitable happens and you lose one overboard ( should be leashed) then it's not bank breaking.

I also got a couple of the rods. An uptide rod and a multi tip at £10 each. £10 is enough to pay when starting. As with kayaks you will keep changing your stuff. As you say. At £10 if you upturn and loose tackle it's no great expense to replace. Steve.
