there has been a lot of discussion about under size fish being taken so with the help of Steve seajunky this small chart has been found it would be a good idea to print a copy and keep it in your kayak hatch so no confusion can take place as to weather a fish is in size or not . visit our printable fish size chart page on the website for the to easy print version . www.northwaleskayakfishing.co.uk/id107.htmltaking under size fish will have an effect on our sport in years to come . please dont do it please remember this is a minimum size chart .

Wouldn't it be great if someone could produce a rugged sticky backed tape measure showing sizes that could be stuck along the side of a yak?

I see Maceral is set at 12 inches. Someone should tell the tackle shops that sell them for bait as I``ve seen plenty for sale under that size!!

Recommended minimum size limits from Angling bodies such as the WFSA and NFSA tend to be greater than those set by DEFRA. DEFRA limits for mackeral are 20cm and 30cm for those taken from the North Sea. ------------------------------------ If you wish to release mackeral try not to handle them and shake them off the hooks instead.

I have tried to find the DEFRA MSL but have not been able to. Could you help please, as It would be in all our interests to know what they are.

RE tape measures for fish sizes.......it just so happens that BASS (the Bass Anglers Sportfishing Society) has already produced a waterproof tape - ok, not sticky one, but you could stick it on something if you felt it was really required, I just keep mine to hand for those odd fish to keep, or for measurements for the scale sampling that is still ongoing, to provide evidence of growth rates and other important data.
These sell for £2.00 each and all the money goes towards the Bass Restoration Project - that is it goes to fund the work of the Society , like the tagging program, which showed up the migration trends and the fact that bass are not free swimming all around our coast, but are actually localised populations with their own, different spawning grounds.
They have also been involved with the netting program of the upper reaches of an estuary (the same one) each year in the same week, of June, twice a day, and count the fry that have survived from the previous years spawning and the one before that (year 0 and year 1 fish). They have been doing this for over 30 years.
The work of BASS is funded entirely from donations and odd sales like this.
I am sure people will also know that the current nursery areas and MLS were introduced due to the work of the Society to highlight the plight of bass and the damage that was being done by netters taking even 8" fish for sale......that practise has been stopped and you have all benefitted from this with the 1lb fish that are now abundant. The Society is still working towards raising the average size of fish caught.....buying one of these tapes would be one small step to help support that work.
I have some in stock as I am an active member of the Society. You can send a cheque or PO, or cash - but please make it out to B.A.S.S., not to me. There is also useful info on the tape about bass growth rates and a pretty good guide to weight for length - produced from several thousand actual fish lengths and weights. It is very good for fish up to about 6lb - 7lbs, after that the length/girth ratio can vary widely - so it isn't deadly accurate, but a good guesstimate to give you a good idea.
Anyway - get in touch for one, and kill two birds with one stone, support your sport and those who are supporting you and get the means to measure your fish.
PS - just thought. I could take some to Expo and collect them from there! Save the postage.

Hey SM I have tried to find the DEFRA MSL but have not been able to. Could you help please, as It would be in all our interests to know what they are. Steve Hi Steve For each area of the UK there may be different minimum size limits for different species as set by the local fisheries committee. However it appears that for some species including mackeral there is a blanket minimum size across the UK (& also EU?) (MAFF are now DEFRA sizes). On this page the species which have been given measurements in the MAFF (read DEFRA) column are the minimum sizes across the fisheries ( I THINK!). web.ukonline.co.uk/shoosh/minimum.htmRegional Size limits North Wales www.nwnwsfc.org/fisheries/fish_sizes.htmSouth Wales www.swsfc.org.uk/home.htmAs you can see in the links, the minimum size is the same for mackeral. Other species like bass and plaice have a set limit across the regions too. If you read the key and follow the link on this page: www.southernsfc.org.uk/mls/it will show you which species have the national & eu limits (shame they couldn't show all the info on one page + the site only works properly in Internet Explorer.)
