This is my review of this vhf radio
The first thing you notice when it arrives is the superb packaging box it’s full of good information on the features of the HX300 radio. The contents are wrapped and packaged in a rigid plastic liner this keeps everything secure and in top condition
The instruction manual is very comprehensive even giving advice on correct procedures when making calls with your radio and which channels to use
The radio is made from the finest quality components with large easy to use buttons and a solid abs plastic body that feels good in the hand the radio is feature packed with new technology and superb innovative new ideas which have never been used in a portable vhf radio before.
The HX300 radio comes with a 1560 mAH 3.7v long life Li-on battery as its power source but additional accessories for the Hx300 include a dry cell battery case
Fitting the battery in to the compartment is quick and easy simply slot the battery in to the recess and lock the battery cover in place this forms a watertight seal it is important to lock the retaining clip in place this ensures the seals are all in the right place to keep the water out
Charging the battery could not be simpler on the right hand side of the radio there is a small spring loaded trap door once opened a mini USB plug is visible using the supplied USB lead slot the mini USB plug in to the socket feel for a positive click as you do this once connected you can connect the other end of the cable to the supplied charger or as it has a standard USB plug charge it in the car or on a computer
On the rear of the radio it has a removable belt clip this is a nice large size so no problem using it with cold or wet hands it is big enough to clip on to most pfds and has a strong spring so it wont fall off
The speaker and mic on this radio are at the top this gives better balance to the unit when in the hand it has a large protected easy to read led screen.
The tx or transmit button is rubberised and on the left hand side
The large easy to use buttons are soft keys each button has a backlit edge so can easily be seen in the dark the buttons have a positive feel when pressed one of the new things on this radio is the ability to lock the keypad so you don’t accidentally press a button if in a pocket .
The radio can be programmed in several ways example being which channels to scan duel and tri watch ect.
The on off button is on the bottom centre of the keypad and needs a 2 second firm hold to activate or de-activate the unit
The bottom of the unit has a large opaque window this is another of the new features if the radio falls in to the water it will activate a flashing red led light even if the radio is turned off this makes it easy to see and find even in the dark
The soft rubber antenna is flexible enough that it will bend and not crack off or cause injury when clipped to a pfd though it is not recommended you can see in our tests just how soft it is
The radio is waterproof to ipx8 and floats when in water but together with the superb led flashing visual aid we wont loose many of these in the sea
The Standard Horizon Hx300 is a superb handheld vhf radio it is full of quality innovative new features the feel and functionality is second to none the large soft button keys make it very easy to use special note has to be made of the instruction book this is a very comprehensive and well written book that completes a superb package I feel the Hx300 has set new standards for a handheld vhf radio it has everything needed in a hand held and more it is sure to become a firm favourite amongst all water sport user.
