With the beautiful Welsh Dee as low as it has been for a while, the weather good and a day off work, I was soon on my
way to the river, eager for my first time out this Spring, in search of a wild Brown Trout - or two ... or three ?
This time last year I failed to find a takeable size trout on my first few trips, but plenty of out of season Grayling encouraged me that I wasn't doing much wrong - maybe it was just bad luck !
On arrival , although very little was rising I was still going to use my self tied dry flies cast here and there to try and induce a take. Would my luck be in ? it didn't take long to find out !
A nice size trout which had survived a previous encounter with a different predator showed off it's well healed scars on both sides of it's back. This fighter had to go back. I managed a quick picture before it shot off up stream with impressive speed.
A few smallish Grayling later and a second Brownie obliged, taken from the tail of a pool at the top of the stretch and returned there after a wonderful lively display. Wild Browns are so shy , I was having only a few casts before moving to waters new so as not to alert them. It worked for me, and first cast under a fallen Alder , my fly was engulfed by yet another trout.
Third time UN-lucky for this one as I decided to take one home to eat. To preserve stocks, I rarely take more than one trout per year, but they are beautiful eating.
I layed the fish down beside some of the abundant Primrose and took a picture to remember the moment. I took time to sit and download into my memory, the beauty of the fish, the beauty of the river, and the whole landscape. As I age I take more time for this kind of sentimental stuff
I had been rewarded with a lovely days flyfishing and capped it off with a good Grayling.
May not be smiling in my selfie but believe me - I was inside , what a day ! Now, when can I get there again to search for a trout or two ... or three ?
Enjoy your flyfishing all,
Fishing the Dee in Spring is a joy to behold
Fishing the Dee anytime is more precious than gold
