I'm looking to get one, but it seems far more complicated than i first anticipated! What do people consider as important, useful and gimmicky on theirs? Is there a particular model that you'd recommend? any help would be appreciated! The max would be £200, GPS isn't essential as I have a mapping GPS device (Garmin Oregon 600T) that goes with me anyway.

Hi,
I have a Lowrance Elite 4 dsi, i've put a platinum card in it and it's great.
Put it on the boat, sib or kayak...?
It's brilliant..
Shop around on the sites and you'll get one within your budget....just put a search in Lowrance Elite 4 dsi (the cards are extra cost if you really need one--platinum not gold)
As back up i have a h/h Garmin 12 which is quite accurate, by any standard.
To get back to the tracks of where you literally launched, mark your way points.
Even in fog.........you need a back up......!

The main use of my fish finder is to find features such as drop offs gullies rough ground and holes that may hold fish.I personally use a cheap Garmin now. Been through 3 finders in last 5 year's expensive and cheap ones. A few capsizes in the surf normally kills them

That's exactly what i use mine for.
I know from experience what fish im likely to encounter on the varying seabed conditions.
The dsi is ideal for me, i power it with a CLULITE.
Fitted with an audio type socket, you have to put an audio plug on whatever you need to power.
And lube with waterproof greace, and or store in a sealed container.
Pricey, but well worth it.

Take a look at the Garmin range, simple, sharp images, WATERPROOF and lastly very well priced with more units sold than any other company which means something.

I should do an update. A couple of months back, I bought the Garmin Striker 4dv. It's been perfect. Very happy with it thus far. I'm still not completely sold on the position of the transducer; it's attached by an over the side attachment right now. I was informed that if you attach it inside the hull, you'll lose the effectiveness of the Downvision - is this true? Inside the hull would be more streamlined, but i guess it'd mean mucking around with marine goop or somesuch

I have had both inside and outside fitting and to be very honest, providing you get no air bubbles in the fixing agent used, you will still enjoy perfect reading when the transducer is located inside the hull. There is NO resistance to sounder performance through single skin hull but I would use Sikaflex 291i to fasten the transducer, very strong hold not easy to get air bubbles and designed for marine use.
