It's my dream to catch bass on the fly, especially from the kayak, but I struggle to get them with other methods so any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Best advice would be to get a casting lesson, a day with Carl Hutchinson (aka Berlin)was the best money I've spent, I learned more in a day than in the previous decade, its a strange concept but he shows how less power can equal greater distance??!! Although the distances you need to cast from the Yak are not great, some of the flies are quite large and can create a hinging effect on the line. Other than that with a rod, reel, line, tippet, Polaroids and a selection of Clousers & Deceivers you should be able to catch a fish or two. A simple mackerel on the fly is an absolute joy. Only other advice would be to make sure you wash everything down afterwards.

Good advice. No worries on the casting front, plenty of practice with trout. It's what type of flies and whether you use floating or sinking line that is the question...? Does it need to be calm for good bass fly fishing?

Hi Just registered on the site - been fly fishing for trout for 5yrs now and looking to buy my first kayak so great to see a local site (Chester) Tried kayak fly fishing for Redfish while on holiday in Florida a few years ago (Caught one on a popper!) so great to see it's now catching on over here too. Would like to find a multi purpose kayak that I could take on holiday with the kids, exercise on the river in Chester etc and was thinking of a Perception Scooter. Any advice appreciated!

may sound like the bleeding obvious, but the first must is bass in the area, easier said than done.secondly, you will find that somewhere like for example llyn peninsular is like another country with regard to water clarity not to mention more fish.having spent a lot of time around llandudno with limited success with lures due i suspect to poor clarity[or poor angling] i am comvinced that water clarity is one of the main factors for action, unless anyone thinks differently

Question/Advice for Fredmoore:
I have tried fly fishing for bass from the shore (mainly the Dyssini causeway (north of Tywyn), Clarach Bay and west of Penmon on Anglesey and not had much (well any) success. Although I have been when there was little wind, the water has always had some colour and after what you were saying about water clarity being important, I was wondering if this was the reason for my lack of success. I was intending trying this Sunday, so was wondering where you would recommend on the Llyn peninsula , bearing in mind that I have only the day and I live in Shrewsbury.
