Hi Tony, if you arrange to meet Moniar for a crack at Bull bay let me know as i really want another day up there. I'm sure there are big bass lurking somewhere in the coves. I also want to pinch a little more of Moniars local knowledge and maybe venture a little closer to the rip as i gave it a very wide berth on Sunday. Would also mean when Steve leaves for home we could possibly stay out a little longer if we stay within our safety limits and stick to the areas i felt safe in the little yakka

(am still waiting for Spud to teach me the swellies run in the straights ) Hi Steve I'm of up to Scotland next week to do some of the sea lochs ;D When i get back i will have a look at the tide tables and sort a date out for doing the swellies. Penmon to Bellan drift most of the way with live sandeel and crab baits should find the Bass some were along the way. ;D ;D ;D PS Alan could take you through the Swellies but after hearing his tale of going through with his mates on a cheap blow up dingy and ripping the arise out of it you may be better waiting till i get back from Scotland. ;D

Hi rich It sounds a good idea to me, It all depends on steve and when he can fit a time to do it. I think the swellies are out of my league.
cheers tony

Hi Spud - have a great time up in Scotland - the long drift with sandeel sounds excellent and I have a good local source for live ones.
Tony/Richi - provisionally looking at this coming Sunday, dependent on the weather - maybe try some bass marks again in the easy part of the straights if its rough weather - if its calm, maybe some top close in spots on the west coast. Will let you know nearer the time.

As the 18 kayakers rescued in cove thread has been locked for some reason I will comment in here:
1/ How can 18 kayakers become trapped by an incoming tide? go figure!
2/ I am not surprised there were many rescues last weekend - the number of idiots I saw at Bull Bay doing a variety of silly things in large and small boats and traditional /inflatable kayaks on Sunday means that a few are bound to get into trouble.
3/ As for the weather conditions - right to be cautious for an official meet and cancel it - but look at the photographs of Sunday - if anyone doesnt think that is safe conditions to kayak in they ought to consider taking up another hobby as wind is a fact of life around these shores.
4/ Daily Post reporting always has been and probably always will be poor - they seldom get the correct facts when reporting rescues.

To try put this to bed
the other thread was locked because though the original poster was making the point that the decision to cancel the meet was he right decision several of the posts seam to be hinting at the decision of the coastguard and the admin to cancel was not a correct decision based on the fact that some of the guys got out at bull bay.
1/ haven’t a clue how 18 kayakers got trapped but its what the coastguard reported and for me if they say 18 guys got rescued then 18 guys got rescued .
2/ I agree with you Steve there are so many people out there perhaps they are day trippers I don’t know who are not equipped and don’t have the knowledge to safely be at sea and it will no doubt be someone either ill equipped of lacking a bit of knowledge that will end up being rescued which will reflect on us as kayak anglers.
3/ the meet was cancelled after talking to the Holyhead ops room I spent 30 mins talking to them and there advise was to cancel the meet they are professionals at judging the sea and weather none of us are so there advise will always be taken .
but as we all know even in bad weather there is usually somewhere you can get out and fish on the island but having been criticized in the past for running all over the island trying to find a calm spot (remember penmon) the decision to cancel on the coastguards advise was taken . from the photos it looks like bull bay was fine and well done to the guys that got out you too made the right decision on the day but it could just as easy have not been fine . This does not mean anybody was wrong not the coastguard for his advise. Not the admin for taking the decision to cancel and not the guys who got out for a fish. If we had gone against the coast guards advice and it not been fit when we arrived then we would have been slated or if someone had got hurt we would have been slated. . So I think the decision was right. Many of the guys are not lucky enough to live on or near the island so don’t have the benefit of being able to see the conditions on a given day so we have to rely on weather forecasts and the coastguard. Sundays decision to cancel was not taken lightly and it was a disappointment for all of us who wanted to get out and fish and well done again to the guys for getting out and fishing. But I think the right decisions were taken by everybody.

I entirely agree with your points Terry - it was right to cancel the meet, on the advice of the experts, the coastguard. I think Richi thought there was some implied criticism of those of us that did get out - which clearly there shouldnt be as if it had been unsuitable we woudl have relocated to a safe section of the straights.
I note from the local paper this week that there was a rescue of four people from a kayak at Moelfre last Thursday in a force 5 - I assume it was another large inflatable, and having seen the three person large inflatable last Sunday at Bull Bay I can understand why they would catch the wind more than our plastic ones and be difficult to control in a rip/strong wind.
Moving on, I hope to be out this Sunday if conditions allow - I will post in a new thread once I have looked at the forecast and tide times and size - the straights or inland sea for bass are calling me strongly at present ! Hope the next official meet sees some better weather so we can all get out and do some decent fishing.
