Well finally got out on a kayak, ;D ;D its been a long time coming. What I would like to say is a big thank you to Kev (Hatter) who gave up his time to meet me on the slip next to Colwyn pier last night. He bought down 2 kayaks for me to try out. The Prowler 13 and the Malabu mini x. I spent the first 1/2 an hour learning some of the safety aspects, such as how to evacuate trapped air from my dry suit. and why you should do it. Also how to re enter the kayak both from the rear and sides, which is a useful thing for a novice to know. After re entering from one side and falling straight back out of the other side on a number of occasions, I finally got the hang of it ;D ;D
Being new to kayaking it was great to be able to try out different kayaks as well. The prowler is a very nice kayak, it tracks well, and is an easy paddle as well, with very little slap.
Now for the one I came down to try out, the Mini x. Remember I am a complete novice and my opinions are based on very little experience. But I did find the mini x to be just what I was looking for in comparison to both the p13 and my scrambler I found it to be so stable, it was fantastic, OK it might be a bit slower than the p13, and slightly more difficult to keep it straight, but hey who's in a hurry anyway. My feelings are that for what I want, this could be the kayak for me. Kev demonstrated how stable the p13 is by standing up in it, and also doing a headstand in it (show off) ;D ;D ;D
I felt that not only could you stand up in the mini x , but you could walk around it, if you wanted as it was so stable, I think because of its great maneuverability it would be great fun in the surf as well, it turns in its own length. Finally we went for a bit of a paddle, Kev in the p13 and me in my scrambler XL, what a nice evening, the only thing missing was the fishing gear, still theres always next time. O yes when we were taking the kayaks back to the car park, while pulling my scrambler on its trolley, I carried the mini x back in the other hand it was so light.
Kev if you read this thanks again mate for your time. Its nice to know that there are people like you about, that take the time to show somebody that you don't know the ropes. Cheers mate
Steve
