Had my mind set on the Big Game. After some advise from the forum, had a good think. Wanted to be closer to the water and i don't mind getting wet. Didn't like the idea that i was so stable while learning that i might be limiting any advance in capability. Think i have found a comprimise. The Tarpon 140. I like the seating arrangement and the space in the cockpit. Won't be travelling too heavy. Still, need stability as one of these Seacats will be going by every so often ( i can here you all laughin ) its maybe a couple of mile away, but still a bit of a beast. I'm 6ft, 15 1/2st, have read so many reveiws mostly from America and there is no trend on points. Some say"good big guy kayak", some say"over 220lbs, forget it",and on, and on. I havn't seen many pictures of them being used on the forum and am wondering if there is a why? Any advise would be appreciated as there is one on its way from down south to Brookbanks in Perth for me to buy.

the tarpon looks a good kayak i am told that the build quality is very good it will be good to get your review on it once used what color did you go for .it look like a well designed cockpit for fitting out and the seat /backrest looks interesting i think you will probably need a cushion or something similar to save you from numb bum syndrome ;D when do you get it .

Hi Stargaizer
just an off chance. ...Where are you based? You said Ayrshire in an earlier thread and mention SeaCats in this one. I'm guessing either Ardrossen or Loch Ryan. If the latter, let me know and we can meet up. My folks live in Stranraer and I'm up there fairly often. Ian.

Ian and all, thanks, i'm from Irvine and the Seacat leaves from Troon so its right on my doorstep. Your invitation is a must in my book seeing as i havn't a clue what i am doing. Fishing in this vacinity is pretty poor so i have been fully intending on doing some travelling, so anytime anywhere suits me. My boat will be in Perth at the end of the month and other than some dates with my fishing club i have no commitments and am good to go. I do think i'm Ray Mears a bit, so seen a picture of the 140 in camo and loved it, I will buy a bright coloured cag for out on the sea. Also buying thigh straps, Nordkapp paddle 2200mm, trousers and life vest ( have been a good boy this month ). Will hold up on rigging till i can see first hand any ideas i can rob. For what it will be worth i will definetly post my veiws on the boat. Have the perfect knife to put on the vest, am i missing any nescessities?

Sorry Stargaizer I can't help out on kit because I'm in the same position as you i.e. have just heard about kayak fishing and and am about to get myself a boat. I'll scout out locations in Galloway and let you know. The obvious choice would be at Cairnryan. Steep shingle beach mean easy access and parking and fish around the old pier which is a few hundred meters away. We used to fish it as kids and it was good. It then got closed to the public. They broke up ships there including the aircraft carrier 'Eagle' (unbelievably huge) so there is presumably lots of 'structure' scattered around the seabed. Beware of wakes from the ferries and Seacats although they slow when they enter the Loch. It would be about 1.5hrs from Irvine.

Theres a mark just through Ballantrae ,from givan cross over the river stinchar at ballantrae take the first on the right off the A77 follow road through a farm a short distance along theres a track down to a shingle beach,If you paddle left towards the rocky point ,the locals fish off the rocks and get pollack wrass codling .I have seen also seen bass while watching the salmon jumping.

Hi Fishingmad
what is the Malibu 2XL like to paddle solo? It looks a bit beamy on paper.

Bad news. I had more or less decided on a P13 but then thought that a Malibu 2XL would be useful to take friends/family along and still give the option of solo trips. I would take a small trade-off between easy solo paddling vs. flexibility but is there a substantial penalty when it comes to solo paddling comparing the P13 and Malibu?
Ian.
