Grabbed a few hours fishing from the kayak with Big Al around the Porth-y-Post area yesterday. After two blanks we were hoping not to make it a hat-trick. Before I had even baited up, Big Al was into the mackerel. We caught a couple of dozen or more, but just kept a few for the smoker and a few for bait. Big Al also managed small red and grey gurnards. For the last half hour we paddled back to the reef off Smiley's. Al had another mackerel and I had a text book gentle bite turn into 4ft of angry conger. Caught on Hokkais baited with fresh mackerel strip this is the biggest fish yet to come aboard the kayak at 12lb.

I managed to clear my front hatch and slide it in tail first, so as to delay dealing with it until we were ashore. Just dusting off the conger recipes now Steve

Nice one Steve - will have to get myself out to that reef sometime soon. I fancy some conger for the pot as its years since I tried it - think I would tow it in tho before dealing with it !!! From what I recall they are not easy to kill either, I remember my Mum screaming when one I brought home as a teenager regained life whilst in a sack on top of the freezer and went slithering along the kitchen floor towards her:-)

I am told that the easiest way to kill an eel is to hit it 2 to 3" below the anus (bum) apparently this is were the nerve center is. I bet thats fun trying to convince a 40Lb conger to lie on its back while you hit it in the ass!!;D ;D ;D You would have to talk to it very nicely!!!!!! Happy yakking ;

Nice conger! Had a smaller one off My Way charter the other week and cooked the steaks under the grill - very nice firm fish (been 20+ years since I last ate one but just a nice today as then)
