I'm up in the Lakes next week and would like to have a go at pike. I've not done any fresh water before, so any tackle, bait and tactics would be appreciated. dead bait, lures ?? Also hoping for some trout. Any rules and regs I should know about ? apart from the need for a rod licence. Are you allowed to keep them - I think one would make an interesting meal for the Scouts I wil be looking after ! Cheers Sarge

I think I chatted with Trotter on another site about this, he's at the bottom of Windemere and I will be at the top end. I have Scouts to look after, so cannnot make any fixed arrangements, but you never know, may see you there.

The main necessity is a wire trace and a pair of long forceps. I once tried to unhook a small pike by hand which had taken a rapala while trout fishing. I ended up with one treble in my finger and one in an angry pike. Not nice. Use forceps.
They are reputed to be good to eat from clean water but they have a series of free-floating Y-shaped bones along their flanks which are best avoided The Canadians have a special way of filleting them to cut out these bones.. I assume you can find it on the internet.
Good luck. Ian

I have eaten pike. I'm afraid the small bones put me off. I have had most success for pike with a jigged dead bait, it seems to pick up the bigger fish. Hope this helps. I will be looking out for the piccys and report when you come back. Tight lines and happy yakking ;D ;D ;D Steve

I use to fish a Lake in Lydbury North called Walcott Lake, I found Smelt was unbeatable on there and I took 7 pike in one day with the biggest being 11lb (not a monster but my p.b.) Nice big fat Pike float with the bait suspended about 1ft of the bottom and pump the smelt full of fish oil with a syringe ;D
