Went to Bala on Friday afternoon to check out camp sites for the future and have a go after pike. Caught this jack on a surface lure and lost another of about 8lb; which fell off as I was lifting it out of the water. It was breezy and raining for most of the afternoon. But we found a reasonably sheltered spot. Found a nice camp site on the railway side of the lake. The camp site I was thinking of using (on the opposite side to the railway)is run my a miserable old trout, who does not make you feel welcome at all. So she's black listed. Had to luagh at my lad. He rowed across the other side of the lake to have a go fishing near that bank and then after a while rowed back. He got half way across the lake on the way back and was knackered. It was then he realised he still had his anchor out ;D ;D. John

Well done John, I bet that put up a good fight. Did you try fishing for trout? and how much are the launch and fishing fees?
Cheers

It didn't really put up that much of a fight. The larger one that fell off did; it was like a torpedo; but isn't that always the case - "the one that got away" is always bigger.
It was £5.50 to put the Yak on the lake and to fish. I think it broke down to £3 to fish and £2.50 to launch.
The warden was extremely helpful and made us most welcome. He showed us some pictures in an album of the various fish that have been caught there. He showed us a 10lb trout that had been caught on a Roach deadbait!!!. I've never heard of that before.
I'd say a fish finder is a must as the lake is so deep, you need something to find the underwater features. As we didnlt have one we fished pretty close in to the edge. Even then it is still deep.
I'm definitely up for camping over and making a weekend of it before the winter. John

I was toying with going up to the lakes for a go at the pike before winter - never thought of Bala! Wouldn't mind trying for them on the fly before it gets too cold. If anyones camping over I'd be up for that - could try me new tent!
