This was the scene on the beach at Pensarn last Sat when a gill net was discovered adrift. This single image in my mind is total justification as to why Gill netting should be banned right along the north Wales coast from The Dee estuary to Angelsey.

Yes steve that is a porpoise. Guys if you see any gill nets without the owners details on the marker bouys PLease either phone the EA 0800 807060. Or goto www.cpwf.co.uk and use their reporting facility. Either way you can remain anonymous if you want to. But we really need to stamp out gill netting.

As some of you know I am trying to join WAG on the IFG (Inshore Fisheries Group) There are 3 courses open to me. First I am going to try and get WAG to implement the "Golden Mile philosophy, (nets one mile out) If that fails I will then propose that ALL gill netters have to purchase a transmitter that would fit into a marker boy on the net. They would purchase it when they purchase their license. So when a net is reported to the EA, to save wasting time nets can be checked by a satellite. If the net doesn't show up, Then its illegal. and finally I will try and get gill netting completely banned from the north Wales coast from the Wirrel to Anglesey.

Steve,
Not wanting to be awkward but why don't you want gill nets banned from the Lleyn as well?

Of course I would like to see a total ban, but softly softly catchee monkey. My preference would be to impliment the "Golden Mile" around the whole of the Welsh coast, and move all commercial activity 1 mile off shore, including gill nets.
Just a bit of an update.
A post mortem was carried out on the porpoise, it had drowned, but further test are being carried out to see if it also had Pneumonia, since it should not have been in that area.
Will keep you updated when I know.

Presumably 'drowning' would have been caused by the net?
