Still counting down to maiden voyage this saturday.
I have been trying to think of places to go where my wife and i can have a trip out and find our sea legs in relative safety. As i have said before we want to be confident on the prowlers before we embark on a serious fishing trip. If we say went to Conway and went up the river instead of out to sea - whats it like up there? How about the brackish water around Porthmadog? Or what about the river at Rhyl? When i was on the Jensenn II a few weeks back the skipper said its quite a good place to go - letting the tide push you upriver. Any thoughts.

hi hillfigger, looking forward to your maiden voyage then ;D, where about do you live? its all well the skipper talling you to go on the river, they are small tides but to be honest i think you would be better off on a beach somewhere first, if i knew what beaches were close to you i could give you some ideas of where to go. A beach would be much user friendly for you, there will still be a strong tidal flow in the river even on small tides and could be quite hairy if your new to paddling, and the last thing you want to do is put your wife off paddling! hay hillfigger martin is right you would be much better on a beach like say llandudno north shore you may even be able to tempt martinw to come give you a few paddle tips you will learn so much from a half hour with him and the great thing is martin is an expert at capsize drills so you could do both in one session .

I see youve had some good comments already Hillfigger but here's a chip in from my desk. If you check out your tides and wind etc on this: www.fishingwx.com/detailed.phpyou will be able to see what conditions are in your favour or not.If its first time out with Mrs Hillfigger then it would be good to paddle out with tide and wind maybe not quite in your favour but to paddle back with them both definitely with you . HW around 9.00am or so in conwy and rhyl so during the morning you will be against the ebb tide with the wind in your face if you paddle upriver (i think w/sw forecast). Out of the two i think rhyl would be a better bet for an easier paddle(more shelter) couple of good launch positions either side of the road by the marine bridge. Some coastal venues (Rhos-on-sea, maybe parts of llandudno would be sheltered but the wind maybe offshore. Would be worth monitoring the forecast to see how the wind in particular is developing. Its already been mention to maybe get out with someone off the forum- offers have been made i think- good luck hope to join you one day.

cheers for the advice. i think i will have my first few dips off Nefyn as i know round there pretty well. Though i live in New Brighton i am going to give the mersey a miss for now. Having fished the mersey loads from shore, i know how strong the tide can be!!
I am in Nefyn for a long weekend over the bank holiday. Hopefully the weather will be okay.
I don' really know LLandudno that well. I mentioned Conway as we used to have a boat there years ago. As the boat was primarily for fishing we never went upriver, just straight out to sea.
take it easy Nick
