I know we should keep our paddle leashed to the boat or ourselves but does anyone carry a spare inside the hull just in case the worst happened??

Terry, I', thinking more along the lines if someone capsized and they were by themselves? If for whatever reason you had forgot to tether the paddle you could be in serious trouble.

dont meen to be funny but where do we stop, maybe tow a spare kayak in case we lose ours, think most of us are already overloaded , there are a lot of things we might need multiples of but dont have the room, most boats should have two engines but how many do you see with two, mind you they could carry a paddle.think i for one will be sticking to my trusty paddle and cross my fingers.

Nice 1 Gissmo very good point and that exactly what I think. For me one of the things I love about kayaking is that feeling of isolation and self dependency when out at sea and also that hint of danger, I think that everyone should of coarse take saftey measures but come on lads lets not take it over the top. At the end of the day as long as you have a pack of flares a vhf and a pfd then you are covered, im prettty sure these long distance touring kayakers wont have a spare paddle. Its personal choice if you would like to carry a spare paddle but i dont.

i think the question karl asks is a good one karl is new to kayaking and has not yet had the benifit of a meet to gain some help from the members and see how the paddle acts when used . most of the time we are out in a group but on a few ocasions out on out own i think it would be good practice to carry a spare paddle but in reality paddles are long and would get in the way as raz and gissmo11 says but it could be a lifesaver in an emergency. the modern day paddles are generally so good that it is very unlightly you would break it .if you drop your paddle and its not leased to your boat you will have time to retrive it even in the strongest tides i have experemented with this a few times and found the boat drifts faster than the paddle in the sea so you do get plenty of time to retrive it .

Its personal choice if you would like to carry a spare paddle but i dont. I help organise a Sea Kayaking section of a local kayak club in Hull and they dont often take spare paddles with them. What they rely on is each other. They never stray out of each others sight. Safety is in numbers. I believe this should be for kayak fishermen too. They should always go with a least one other kayaker. Lendal do some nice 4 piece paddles which are easily stored in the kakak bow lockers but have to say i have 5 paddles and only take the one... but never go fishing alone on the yak.

all i use as a leash is a pice of rope with a loop in each end one loop over the paddle and the other through the hatch strap nearest me its workrd ok so far and becouse the paddle loop is not to tight i can move it to the end and puch the paddle well away from the kayak while im fishing

i reckon we kill the spare paddle debate, its goin knowhere either we will take one or we wont individual decision.and my own yak being only 9ft long wont take another ounce lets all make our own minds up on this one,or shall we design another crate to hold spare parts for all occasions? ?

I reckon we should just load gizzmo up with all our spare paddles, coffees and tee's and whatever else LOL, he will probably still get there before us and catch more doggies. ;D
