Fishing the lead head bucktail
Buck tail lead heads come in many sizes colours and styles basically they are a lead headed hook with a buck tail pattern tied to it and fished like a lure
A closer look shows the head made from a moulded lead ball to a hook with a right angle eye from this basis the buck tail is tied and a varnished body wrap finishes the job off
For demonstration purposes I have used orange corline as my line.
normally I would use 12 to 15 mono for this but it does not show up to good in the pictures.
The simplest way to fish the buck tail lead head is simply attach the hook to the end of the line.
using a simple sink and draw works well but trolling is equally effective
Using links makes changing the colour of the buck tail simpler but for a more natural action tie it straight to the line
Extra weight can be added using a lead barrel weight on the line
The 2 hook method is done by simply adding a flyer to the line the flyer is added about 12 inches above the bottom lure this is particularly effective when using sink and draw on the drift because you have twice the weight by using 2 buck tails and cover 2 levels of water on the bottom and 12 inches from the bottom
When the fish are being a little touchy adding a jelly worm really helps to get the fish taking it’s the extra movement that does the trick.
There are many ways to fish the buck tail but simply casting and counting down the depth is very effective.
First cast count to 10 before you retrieve.
Second cast count to 20 and so on this way you will find the ideal depth the fish are feeding and be able to repeat this depth by simply counting down right to the fish
