Hi i am new to yak fishing. I have my VHF Certificate and was wondering should i call in to the coast gard evertime i go out? Or is their limits as to when i should use it.

There is no reason why you should not call them to identify yourself and tell them where you will be paddling so that they are aware. Many do this by phone and just do a signals check on the vhf. The benefit of the phone call is you can give them your 'paddle plan' and estimated time of return, don't forget to ring though to tell them you are back safely. Also consider doing a CG66 with the Coast Guard. Terry

The GC66 is an online form which is held on the coast guard (GC) records for 12 months im told. Also let someone at home know of your paddle plan and etr (estimated time of return)or eta (estimated time of arrival)
Remember your mobile phone won't always get a signal when your on the water.
You should have a hand held VHF radio, get the one with a 6 watt output....as most were 5 watt output.

As Terry says, I always call from the phone to advise my plans to the coastguard and ALWAYS phone them when you get back.
