Having bought your shiny new kayak it is important to transport it correctly all too often we see and hear of kayaks being damaged as a result of incorrect loading or poor strapping so here is a simple guide to the correct straps and how to use them safely on your kayak without damaging your kayak
Firstly load the kayak face down on the roof rack bars some people use foam supports on the roof bars or pipe lagging I chose not to I want a solid contact with my roof bars and the kayak
A word about straps do not use bungee straps /do not use ratchet straps or bits of string or rope all are inefficient and could damage your kayak having spent so much money on your nice new kayak .buy yourself a pair of quality cam straps the type I use are made and sold by piranha they are a wide strap with a quality cam buckle specially made for the job
You can see the wide buckle on these superb straps they are available from Go-kayaking
link to go kayaking
They cost £14.99 a pair of 5 metre straps and will last for years they are simply the best cam straps available in the UK
Simply slide the straps under your roof bars as shown in the picture and double back to the cam
An Ariel view shows how I put a twist in the straps this prevents any whistling noises while driving along.
The end of the strap is simply slid through the cam retainer and tightened firmly this will hold your kayak safely and solidly removing the straps is a case of pressing the cam retainer and sliding the strap out .
This is one of those pieces of kit that everybody should have it’s not an expensive outlay and makes the job safe and secure for your journey
