Well I finally got afloat on my new yak a Trident 13, I've only been waiting since January, combination of weather work and buying a house has took its toll on my hours on the water. I loaded my car up yesterday so I was ready to roll out early this morning. Well as I wasn't meeting up with anyone my predetermined timings slipped a few hours to the right. No point getting there too early as high wasn't until 3ish atleast that was my justification. After a uneventful drive I finally got on the water for 12 and took a leisurely paddle out to my mark. I intended on fishing 1 rod for the rays and 1 for whatever else was swimming as I didn't want to blank on my first launch of the year. First cast with a lug tipped with crab got me amoungst the whiting, small but welcome. It wasn't long after that my first ray bait made its way to bottom and five minutes later; Result Next cast; Get in... I could be on for a decent session here I thought to myself, prime feeding time hasn't even started yet. I switched both rods to half mackerel fillet and then nothing for the next 3 hours, kind of odd really as I would have thought they would of been feeding over the slack  A success non the less, fingers crossed the weather is good for next weekend

Nice one :-) Can I ask what depth the thornies were at?, in Church Bay we fished at thirty and forty feet in January and got just Dogfish and a lone codling James and I are planning a trip on Wednesday, we can't really do weekends because of work......

40ft, there wouldn't have been a lot of rays about in January, they start showing in numbers mid February.
The whole area in front of cable bay/ty croes is full of rays. Plenty of rays coming in from the rocks at both marks at the moment.
Just find flat sandy bottom and you won't go wrong.

Thanks Shaun :-) Looks like we're out in Church Bay on Thursday now. Might go the night before and throw a bivvie up. Light winds forecast and low water at 3.30pm Have you tried feathers for mackerel or herring at this time of year ?

There wont be any mackerel about, unfortunately we aren't blessed like the lads down south who pick them up year round. Not sure on the herring situation though maybe Malcolm at ABC will be able to shed some light on that. There will be sand smelt and other white bait fish about though if you use micro sabikis. I fancy a go out of church bay this summer for the smoothies. I've just Just looked at the map on Navionics. I'd be looking to fish around the reef/bar, find the sand just off the reef on the down tide side and you will find the rays or I'd fish the hole that's 10m deep. Don't just go for deep water though, Deep doesn't mean fish, features mean fish The tides are massive on Thursday though so its important to find the slack spots where the food will gather and the rays will seek shelter.

I saw some of those features on the chart on my iPhone, just a question of finding them....... Weather is really settled atm, shame you can't get out We're taking the bivvie over tomorrow night, so that we can get out early

Hi Shaun how do you know what you are looking at their mate all looks very complicated Should be out soon she is a lot better now how was the new FF see soon The numbers indicate depth. What the letters, squiggles, symbols etc mean can be found here; mapserver.mytopo.com/mapserver/nautical_symbols/V1.htmlIts easier than it looks. That's good to hear, I was going to PM you tonight on WSF to see if your about this weekend. The FF is good so far, shows the bottom up quite well

I'll be out Saturday and Sunday but its gonna be colder :/ Its no fun this work thing we have to do haha
