Might sound daft but why do you let 4 times the depth of line out when you are at anchor don't you drift about a lot

Up to 4 times depending on the strength of the tide.
The extra length decreases the angle of the warp to the anchor helping it to hold better as the tide pulls. Plus waves can affect the stability of the yak to anchor. A longer warp dissipates any effect.

That's in the sea, Gilly, Im pretty sure you wouldn't need to put so much out in your canal ! :-) With the anchor rope or warp coming up almost vertically, the kayak could be pulled downwards in a strong tidal flow, not good .....

Thanks I don't use in canal just wasn't sure why 4times longer now I no so thanks chaps

Dont forget if you anchor in the flood and dont let enough out by the time you get to to the top you will be going down.
