features i look for on the rivers are holes maybe only a foot or two diffrent than normal depth bumps and obstructions dropoffs or slopes most of the waters i fish with dead baits 6ft to around 14ft seems to produce the fish. time wise there seems to be 2 times of day that are more productive first light till around 10am and the last 2hrs till dusk. a bag of chopped mack or sardine on the anchor line normally bring the fish to you if they are not to far away. 90 mins in each targeted place then move to the next

that's great advice Pike! never thought of that - putting a scent on the anchor! lets hope the rivers start running abit lower! Dave

always struggled to catch live bait in the winter presume a ffinder will help we locate the shoals?? Where will the shoals of roach be generally on a river? Also is the best way to catch winter roach using bread ground bait and bread flake on a small hook? cheers dave

Either use a small trap like you buy for crcrab or shrimp or make one out of galvanised mesh cut the top and bottom off a plastic bottle and stuff it with bread to attract the fish

Worm, both chopped and whole, always seems to find rudd, roach and perch in colder weather on my local river.
A good pal of mine has being buying FRESH sardines from Tesco which have out fished all other dead baits over the last couple of years.
Another thing to look for on the river is any outfall from smaller streams, land drains etc as these seem to be pike holding areas on my stretch of the river.
