What a lovely morning the rain is lashing down, and blowing a hoolie !
Thought i might put my feelers out to see if anyone has or knows of a 2 stroke out board motor for sale...?
I would like it to be around the 9.8 hp size due to weight ratio, and is what i can happily carry.
It's got to be a short shaft, either a Tohatsu would be my 1st choice or what have you.
Cheers

Just as a point of interest Alan, a 10hp outboard is VERY similar in weight to a 15hp as they are quite often electronically governed or a different carb so if your boat has a max of 15hp, think about the extra power of a 15hp with a full load as it makes a hell of a difference. If 10hp is your limit.....................lots of luck trying to find a 9.8 Tohatsu because they are as rare as hens teeth and expensive to boot.
You can look up the different manufacturer's engine weights on the internet so establishing what engines are similar to the 10hp sister product. In two stroke, Johnson produced one of the lightest 15hp outboards available at 30kg which is lighter than some 10hp units so it is worth looking into this situation. I am 65 years young on new years day and I can handle a 15 off the water but that is my limit, gone are the days when I used to sit one on my shoulder and walk it down the beach.........

Thank you for your valued expertise....as always. Having someone looking in, outside the box makes the choice a lot simpler. A Tohatsu 9.8hp 2stroke would be available but i'd have to wait, approx 10 days ? A big if , and a deposit required hmmm. Private dealer ? I look, like, and pay, then take away..... And you are probably right, a 15hp would make sense It would have to be a 2 stroke though... Plan B TBA Cheers Phil ps:I hope i'll look as well as you when i get there. x

Just one small point Alan regarding the holy grail that is a Tohatsu 9.8, they are the best 10hp two stroke ever made which is why they are very sort after BUT they will NOT perform to the output level of a 15hp from any manufacturer
Depending on your budget, it may be that some of the 4 stroke engines from Japan are getting closer to the weight of a 2 stroke and although it is quite a while since I did a range of comparisions, I seem to recall that Suzuki engines are lighter than any other make out there within the power range you are thinking about so don't kick 4 strokes out as a whole. I will say of course that most are very heavy compared to it's 2 stroke rival. The average 2 stroke 15hp is about 35k whereas the 4 stroke version is about 53k, taking this as a yardstick, you can rummage through the net to establish what will fit the criteria remembering to look at both up to date info on 4 strokes but also past info on 2 strokes no longer made which does take more time I'm afraid matey.

Thanks for your replies Phil.
I've been bouncing from pillar to post and now going for a 15hp.
A Mariner marathon 15hp 2stroke..
It was a last minute decision but a good one i feel.
Been waiting for returned phone calls from various dealers, some want your life history and a declaration signature.
Still awaiting Higham Marine to call me back, got a price and a rough estimate on Parsun delivery.
But, whether they were getting one in was something else. Still no phone call, but never mind.
The price quoted on that was £1200.00 , the other Mariner marathon is £1400.00 which is what i've gone for.
It should be here this week hopefully.
Cheers

That should work out nicely I think and having had Mercury engines before, you won't go far wrong.
Bill Higham has really taken a backward step in the business and let his son Simon run things...................for the worse in my opinion. Bill is a good bloke but Simon welllllllll leave it at that.
Enjoy your new engine, you will not regret it.

Just got a phone call this morning to inform me that he hadn't mentioned about the scuffs on the cowl,ok fine i can live with that.
Now just got phone call, he'd just tried to start engine before pick up delivery arrived.
Engine ran, died and won't start......
So, the Mariner marathon 15hp is staying where it is, a shame i was looking forward to it.
Back to the drawing board ?
