Hi there, Sorry if it sounds silly , but I think I would like to have a robust emergency communication device which sends emergency signals, and tells the current global position, to the coast line guard just by pressing one button. So I imagine the device is a blend of GPS device and communication radio. I don't think during a very distressing time, I can bother to read the GPS device to know the current position.

No need of license but you have to register it with the Coast Guard so they know who is in trouble if it goes off.

My apologies for this general enquiry - the safety devices mentioned including radios are cheaper in the States and as I'm over there shortly I could save myself some money to put towards other shiny things when I get back? What I need to know is are they compatable for integrating with the systems in use here? I know all electrical items without an EEC mark are seriously frowned upon if brought back to these shores! If one of you learned persons could point me in the right direction or should I have peace of mind and buy here?

You may want to have a look at this thread I started some time back. It was brought to my attention about the CE markings and so far I have received NO information what so ever to say that you cannot use them legally in the EU. This seams to be because marine radio equipment is governed by international regulations. Read the thread for more detailed feedback. I will keep the thread updated as and when I receive new information. zebrakayak.proboards81.com/index.cgi?board=itemsontest&action=display&thread=1176

I have a USA bought radio with no CE markings and it works perfectly well over here and has been extensively tested by a friend with a full license.
To reiterate, thus far I have not found anything, anywhere, online or otherwise which categorically says that it is an offence to use such equipment without the CE markings, and I am lead to believe that marine radio equipment is exempt from such legislation due to the international standards that govern the use of such equipment. Furthermore the CE markings only apply to marine radios that are manufactured within the EU and has no bearing on their legal use internationally.
My personal opinion is, that until it is proven to the contrary then I can't see any reason why such equipment shouldn't be used. I for one would rather use a perfectly good radio without 'two small letters' printed on it, if it meant saving my life, than worry about some EU Directive claiming I am breaking EU law by using it!!
This is my understanding from the research I have done so far, and having hit a 'dead end' I have drawn my own conclusions as to whether I am breaking the law or not. Suffice to say if in doubt seek further advice. (if you can find it!)

Hi Jim
I have just come off of the phone to a VHF radio instructor who shall remain nameless. And his take on this is that provided you have a VHF radio licence. Nobody to his knowledge would be checking for the kite mark or now the CE marks on your radio. So I really don't think that you would have a problem.

Cheers Steve I can't see there being a problem either.

The only problem I can see is maybe trying to get repairs carried out on a product that doesn't carry the kite mark, also there may be an issue with guarantee's.
