I went to Roassal on Thursday 18th with my trusty 2xl for another bash at whatever would take mackeral bait.
Got into the water soon after 10am and paddled out about a mile. Low wind across the beach but a bit of onshore swell too. Anchored up with a quick release buoy system off the bow as it felt a bit choppy for the stern and kept wobbling about from side to side.
It was then I discovered I'd forgotten my home made rod rests!
Soon started getting some bites and up started to come the dog fish. 5 of them were a good size and were taken, the others returned. I don't like to go home with nothing. Also caught a small whiting.
After a few hours I was feeling a bit uncomfortable and decided to head in. The side wind was producing a confused sea and at anchor the bow was rising and falling splashing down on the waves.
As I paddled in, I saw a few dots on the horizon and thought they might be dingies so went over for a look. After a while I could see they were kayaks, then I saw one with a rod so went over to say hello. It was La, Webby and Appy.
Great to meet you fellas. I'm normally alone up here except when curly is able to come out too. We were a lot nearer shore here and the wind and swell were much less. I decided to stay a while and conditions just got better.
La had caught a lovely looking plaice
Appy's anchor system was playing up a bit, but soon he was pulling up dab after dab.
Webby got a good plaice too then was catching dog fish every drop.
I caught a few very small whiting, a weaver and a couple of mackeral - which I was very pleased with as I didn't think the water here was generally clear enough for them to see feathers -they seemed to manage it alright!
I ran out of bait and Cath was expecting me home so at about 5:30 I said goodbye and paddled back up to Roassal to land. A really good day out and great to meet some of the guys from this site.
