Managed to get the modifications i started at the begining of the xmas hols done last night in time for the first real good day for getting out for a while.
Got up with the birds and set off for Dunure. I had been here last year during summer and had a great day so i was looking forward to the day, trying out my new anchor set-up, trying out the boat with my monster battery positioned at the back of the boat instead of the front and trying out the Ebay peeler crab bait that i hadn't tried before.
Dunure is a small port village just south of Ayr. It's never that busy even in the summer that you can't easily get the van down to the slip way and have space next to it leave it there.
The first mod that i had done to the boat was to locate the battery to the back of the boat. You know when sometings not quite right with the boat and i new that since i had fitted my fishfinder storing the battery in the front hatch. I don't know the exact weight of the battery but it must be 6 kilos ( scales are banned in my house ).
Me rigged up and ready to go.
As i made my way out to the mark i was going to i took some time to try and think if i could feel any difirence and i don't know what it has done but it does feel a lot better. Sorry for being a bit vaige, it was hard to think what the weight was doing to the boat with it in the front also, it's just better.
The mark was 1.3 mile out, a reef that goes from 50m to 17m very sharply. I was quite surprised at the size of the swell coming in, about 3ft and how fast it was coming at you. My intentions was to fish the top of it with the peeler crab fished on the bottom and a french boom a couple of feet above bottom with a lure i tied. Maybe a Ling from the bottom and if anything small took the lure i would fish it over the drop off hoping for a conger.
My new anchor set up i have went with, came about from the hassle i was having with my anchor rope twisting as i wound it on to the rope holder. I could always remember Rapalas we dinky thing that he had ( anchor that is ) and how it held him no bother in conditions that were probably as rough a condition that anybody would go out in, fishing at least and so i thought about how i could easily wind something that size on to a multiplying reel. I cut up an old boat rod and repositioned the handle onto it. It is secured on to the boat with a pipe fitting and a pipe clip, both positioned so there is very little movement when pushed in and clipped down. The reel sits snuggly out of the paddling stroke and the rod tight against the side not interfearing with re-entry or side sitting.
The anchor works a treat. But my plan for the fishing didn't. I had a couple of takes on my bait caster and jelly worm but nothing from the bottom. I found that you were better compressing the peeler crab bait on to the hook rather than just hooking. I went through 10 of the 12 baits that i had before getting that. Thats not my excuse for not catching, i put 3 hours at difirent locations on the reef with nothing. I'll hold on to blaming the peeler crab for now. I've still got 12 baits left anyhow but i'm not one for pateince on something. I hate not catching anything.
Hate that reef i did so decided to fish along the rocks next to the castle for some pollock to try and salvage something on the fishing as the tide was well in and the dog tied to the van well pixxed.
A reprieve. A small pollock but a cracking take. That was enough.
A good day was had. Happy with the mods and happy with the fish and still had time to kick the ball about with the dog when i got home.
