the first part of the course was classroom based here we were thought the basics of tidal movement what effects tides water feature reading and and general navigation we spent 3 hours in the classroom but it seamed like only 20 minutes we both found this very informative and learned a lot from it

when we arrived at surf-lines it was freezing temperatures and snowing with a small covering of snow on the ground we were greeted very warmly and then introduced to our instructor Giles we were taken on a quick tour of the building and then to the kitchens for a hot cup of tea .
the first part of the course was classroom based here we were thought the basics of tidal movement what effects tides water feature reading and and general navigation we spent 3 hours in the classroom but it seamed like only 20 minutes we both found this very informative and learned a lot from it
Here with the aid of some clever electronics we are being shown the tidal movement around the UK by Giles
We were then taken to the shop where Giles pointed out some of the safety features of various pieces of equipment like pfd’s and cags
Next up was for Giles to inspect and check the equipment we had brought with us to use for the day Giles carefully checked our clothing / safety gear and kayaks.
Next part of the day was the practical for this we went to the meni straights just upstream of the swellies we used the manta ray kayaks for this on the day all 3 sizes were used 11ft. 12ft and 14ft
Once on the bank ready to go Giles checked us out again making sure everything was correctly worn and fastened the explained to me the importance of the paddle shaft and setting the feather
Once on the water we rafted up while the features we had learned about in the classroom were pointed out to us
We were individually then coached to improve our technique on paddling and kayak handling and given plenty of time to practice what we had just learned while the tide was just starting to flood
We then moved in to the heart of the swellies the water was now in full flood we were taught several new techniques to us for handling the fast water like ferry gliding and how to use eddies and breaking in and out of eddies safely.
All the time we were practicing the new skills we had learned we were cleverly coached at our own pace this made the learning curve very easy for us to absorb and execute and remember.
Our time was running out by now and the light was just beginning to fade we finished of the day with some safety drills .
Once back on the bank a re-cap of what we had learned during the day and how to use them new skills in out kayak fishing .
We had a fantastic days coaching from our coach Giles we learned so many new things that we can now put in to practice when we go afloat.
By the end of the day we could both see big improvements in the skills we had learned the methods used to teach us these skills made learning a very pleasurable experience.
