Nice and compact, that's for sure.
Though at £60, given the choice of that or a 2nd hand Etrex/Garmin 60, what would you go for?

I think that's what Rob was implying 300, Garmin would be first choice for the price.

the main difference i can see is the garmin gives you gps co-ordinates and the maplin one does not though i did get chance to see the maplin one while out fishing with tamwortian and its a superb simple locater the main idea is when you are about to launch you set a marker point and it will track and show you the way back should you get lost in dark or fog

You can also set your start point and track your travels and down load onto a PC with the Garmin, but if you need help or capsize and can't get back to your yak you have you co-ordinates at hand. Like we have spoke about before Zebra at what price do you put your LIFE £9.99, cos that is the difference between the 2 GPS's. The Garmin gives you all the right information in a EMERGENCY, does the one from maplins.

It is not a case of £9,99. it is what works for us bet as individuals and what we feel competent to use, if you follow that logic of what price your life, should we all go out to sea in nothing but the best seaworthy yak money can buy, i know if i were lost for what ever reason the Bushnell tracker would get me back to my start point, it gives a read out in ft meters and miles also compass mode, i would not know how to follow way points on some of the more sophisticated GPS systems, especially while swimming to follow your scenario.

So if you was 1 1/2 miles out at sea and in the water your yak as gone one way and you the other, your bushnell tracker wrapped up in its condom and you have to radio the emergency services for help, how do to tell them where you are? . The Garmin not only as the way point on shown on screen from where you started but also as gps co-ordinates to help you direct the emergency services to you.

Nobody ever claimed that the Bushnell was an all singing all dancing unit. Its a very basic low tech get you back to your starting point devise. Its for those occasions when the fog comes down, and you can't see the beach, or you stay out to long, and it gets dark. It will get you back to your launch point by the push of a button. It is agreed that the more sophisticated units will give you your geographic coordinates. But lets be honest, before launching you should have logged a paddle plan, so the coastguard will have a pretty good idea where you are anyway. So to conclude, its a low tech, low cost, get you back to the launch point device only.

oops!, my comment wasn't meant to ruffle feathers.
I just though that at it's price and with the facilities it offers, I'd rather go for a 2nd hand item which offers far more.
I reckon if it was 1/2 to 1/3 of the price it may be worth having such an item clipped to your PFD.
