Mitchells were very popular boat reels and some even tried to beachcast with them, I have a 602 ap, very similar, but only use it to drag my boat up the beach.LOL..My intrepid black prince would outcast them anyday.LOL

The Penn, is most probably an Sea Mate, or a Sea Scamp, however, i would go for the Sea Mate. It was the first multiplier i owned. The next version up was the Sea Boy, which had a star drag.

The Mitchell is a 600 ap .model ap meaning all plastic (the one you have). Michell made 2 versions of this reel the 600 which had a metal spool and and rim and was intended as a budget boat reel retail was originally £43.95. And the 600ap which retailed at £39.95.had a plastic spool and was intended as a shore casting reel. At the time these reels were brought out we had very little choice in the multipliers on sale we had the pen sea mate which is the other reel you have which retailed at £19.99 the Michell 600 and ap models and the abu 7000c and 1000c the Abu’s were retailing at £99.99 and £109.00 The Mitchell 600 range was the trend setter for an affordable under £50 shore or boat reel they were both seen as serious anglers tackle the pen one was seen as a boys reel at the time note the 600ap did not have level wind level wind was seen as a luxury back then and only abu had them it was one of there main selling points but the 600 ap if you give it a good clean will last you years they were solid brass gearing and no frills drag set up at the time they were considered the standard reel we all had though we were all saving like mad to move up to the Abu’s until diawa brought out the million air which started the whole choice in reel’s we all have now. ;D The one you have steve is a later version the originals did not have the red Garcia badge on them

i spent 10 years in the fishing tackle trade chris ;D (had a few tackle shops ). there was another model added to the michell range at the time it was the 624 boat reel retail £59.99 became probably the most used reel of its time funny how some things just stick with you after all the years when i was writing the reply i could even see the main rep for them in my mind and his big smile Arther fogerty from aiken what a great guy he was ;D

In my younger days I had a narrower 602AP with chromed brass rims. I used it for beachcasting in the days when you had to be brave to cast a muliyplyer. No brakes and always carried a spare spool of bulk line.
The plastic spools were prone to bursting under pressure as the centre of the spool has some holes in it and if you look carefully it looks like its 2 pieces glued. I busted 2 but they were cheap to replace. The spools on the 600s were worse than the 602s as the wider one was used more for the boats.
My first rod was an ABU 464 with sliding reel fitting, It was the dogs doo dahs. ;D (We used to catch fish all year round then)

I have an ABU 403 Atlantic Zoom which I brought way back in the early 70's. I have lost count of the fish I have caught on it, from barbel to bass, from pike to pollack a great servant. It still gets used from time to time.
