A bit quiet in the N Sea, so my thoughts turned to what I am going to do when I am back home. The plan includes a paddle from Pwllheli to Criccieth. Now that I am all trained up on the VHF, I thought it was was about time I used the thing. Despite the training, I am bit unsure about proceedure, so I e-mailed the good folks at Holyhead coastgaurd with what I thought was right and it seems I was just about right. A typical transmission would be :
Me on CH16 : "HHCG, HHCG, this is Kayak Sarge, Kayak Sarge over. HHCG : Kayak Sarge, this is HHCG, please switch to CH xx, over. Me on Ch xx : HHCG this is kayak sarge, I wish to log a passage plan with you, over HHCG : KS, this HHCG go ahead please, over. Me on ch xx: HHCG this is kayak sarge. There will be 3 kayaks, with 4 persons on board departing from Pwllheli harbour to Criccieth today, departing 10:00, ETA in Criccieth at 17:00, over. HHCG: Kayak Sarge, this is HHCG, message received, thankyou, out"
They also added :
"what we do ask and it is voluntary, is that you log your passage plan, start, destination, eta etc, either by radio or phone and give us a call when you come off the water. This has many advantages in that, we know that you are there and we know where to look if anyone becomes concerned about your welfare or if we become concerned about your welfare.
Enjoy your trip and we look forward to being in contact with you,
A Watch "

As ever I am in the wrong place at the wrong time. I have been offshore for every meet since Moelfre in the wind. I go to Criccieth at the back end of next week, so hope to get some yak fishing in. The mac's are usually close in there late August and I've seen some good reports from Pwllheli. Looking ahead, I will miss Llandudno in Sept, but should be home for the Cemlyn Bay meet in October, as long as my schedule doesn't get mucked up !
