I was reading with interest about a guy in a big game kayak who recently had a problem with a split scupper, and hailed attention by raising his paddle up into the air. Apparently this is a recognized call for help. Can anybody confirm this please.

yes raise one blade and wave it about its recognised as a sign of distres some people attach solas reflective tape or bright stripes to one paddle blade some manufacturers have 2 different colour blades all for the same reason .

you can get solas tape on ebay its a special tape that wont come off in sea water and the slightest light on it reflects back like a spotlight i use to have some on the bottom of my p13 and the sides i cut out circles and put them on along the water line then if i was being searched for my kayak would be easily seen even if its upside down .

I was thinking, if You were to cut up a high visibility vest (like the ones either worn on the railway) Bright orange, or the yellow one, worn by transport people, you could make a sleeve that could in the event of an emergency be slid over the blade, It would be high visibility and have an reflective tape on it. In fact for the price of one of the high visibility vests you could also have a hi-vis flag for your kayak as well.
I will have a go, and if any good I'll publish some photo's

for sticking to your yak buy a couple of meters of solas reflective tape their is plenty on ebay you can cut all sorts of shapes from it and its sticky backed so their is no messing about with glues .once on the yak they stay syuck for a long while i have had some stuck to a yak for about 2 years now at least .
