Hi all Popeye here. As I am a Medic by profession, I have been asked by Zebra if I would mind posting the odd first aid tip on this safety section. As you are no doubt already aware, a basic knowledge of first aid is very important for anyone who Perseus our type of pass time I have been registered post qual in the medical profession for 22 years. I initially trained as an Operating Theatre Technician in the Royal Army Medical Corps in which I served 15 years and continued to practice in civvie street for the past 14 years. I am required by the Health Profession Council to update my basic and intermediate life support skills annually and have recently attended an Advanced life Support course So over the years from Army service to operating theatres and A&E I have acquired alot of knowledge and experience which I'm sure will be of value to us all Zebra in the near future will be organizing a meet and I will be giving instruction on first aid and passing on 1 or 2 top tips. Sorry for this long winded post, but I thought you might want to know my background and Qualifications, before I started to gob off on such an important subject Cheers Popeye aka Mark

Popeye, It's reasurring to know we have a wealth of knowledge on here, and to take advice from people like yourself will only improve us a people and kayakers. I have seen Zebra asking you what should we carry in our personal first aid kit, so I will eagerly await reading the thread. I am very interested in it. ATB. Reeco

when i went through my first aid kit yesterday i noticed a lot of the metal objects were rusty if i were to use a rusty pin to fasten up a bandage would that rusty pin pose any danger to the injured person because of the rust on it could it contaminate his blood in some way .

Hi M8 You are right, any item that is going to potentially come into contact with an open wound, should be clean, better still, where conditions allow sterile. Zebra you have triggerd a thought actually, It would`nt be a bad idea, for our trusty Kayakers to nip to their G.P. and see if there tetanus is upto date. This will safe guard them from an infection which could cause lock jaw Things or Items such as rusty metal, Animal bites, ect. can potentially cause some nasty probs. Tetnus jab is definatly a good idea. Cheers M8 Hope this helps Popeye

so should we bin all the rust bits and replace them perhaps putting all the metal bits in a separate waterproof bags to prevent this happening in the future .
i read somewhere about a man who cut his head while he was out fishing and used the sea water as a disinfectant by soaking his hat and squeezing it on to the wound is this practical or could the sea salt water cause infections if this was to be done . i thought it a bit strange at the time i read it .

Hi there ;D Its funny really, as coincidence would have it, I was chatting recently to Seajunky about first aid kits, he was telling me about the lotions and potions he had in his. I said to him "why" and He replied "well what about infection" the answer is really that salt water will protect against infection its a natural cleanser, also sea kelp is good too (rich in Iodine). I had to admire Seajunky, because, He took the initiative rather than leave things to chance. As for all things metal. We all know that salt water and salt air will penetrate just about anything, so the answer there, is check your kit regulary. Injury from a sharp impliment is better than one from a blunt one If the worst came to worst ,Infections can be treated at the hospital by means of anti biotic cover, but lets not take this for granted, cleanliness is next to godliness, its all about personal discipline, which makes us as a club. I belive that we are out playing in natures back yard, it is full of natural recourses, the more we get to understand it, the more it will help us. The Rule of the `P`s Presentation and Preparation prevent Piss Poor Performance Sorry but its one of my favorites All the best hope this has helped Popeye
