How many people are carrying a radio with no license  ? I carry flares, mobile but no radio. The cost of the license prevents it at the moment. It does not encorage small boat owners / kayakers to carry radios, and as they are now less than £50 for a handheld I think most would choose to carry them if the license wasn't so expensive to obtain. |

I don't know how much you think the licence will cost you, but it's not a lot. £50/60. Pav are you in the north Wales area?

Hi Pav,
I have done the course and got the license but for quite a while i carried a vhf before doing it. I always thought that if i had to use the radio i would do and then worry about not having the license after.
I also carry a cheap pay as you go mobile in a waterproof bag as my paddle plans always include a phone call when im ashore - to say that there is no fish for tea again.

we just put a load of members through the course at a cost of £50 a person and that includes the RYA licence, so not a bad price in my oppinion

No down in north devon, but do get up to the wirral every now and then. If I could find somewhere offering the course and license for £50 I'd be happy.
Yes I have a similar view - in an emergency you'd just use it! , and already carry a phone and flares. If I do pay out for a handheld however I'd like to get full use of it as the estuary here can be busy.

I have bought a radio and have booked in to surflines next course, its a bit expensive but who can put a price on their life!

I have a radio but no license but nearly always paddle with people who do have a license, and there is some rule that you are then covered I think if it is used for 'training'.
Also registered my call sign with the CG66 can help in the event of an emergency as they will know what type of craft/its colour etc to look for as well as emergency telephone numbers.
I think as long as you know radio procedure they would rather you called them in an emergency without a license rather than stuffing you into a body bag after a huge air-sea search.

Jessica, again you have not read the post.
The price was 50 UK pounds not US dollars. Therefore about $80. But if you had read the post you would see the price is for a 'Small Radio Operators Course', and the price was only gained as part of a group discount.
Oh and just to clarify it is the RADIO that is small not the operator......
