I was body boarding at Hells Mouth yesterday and helped a bloke launch an orange SOT in the [small] surf as his wife was having difficulty keeping his boat pointed out to sea so I helped him get out past the breaking waves. It was a lovely sunny day and the sea was relatively smooth but there was a off-shore slight cross-wind across the bay and an ebb tide that could be difficult to paddle against if you were tired [in my opinion] He had a couple of rods, gear and decent paddle and seemed confident, paddled off and that was the last I saw of him, however he didn't have a BA on, just a wetsuit; even my wife noticed from the beach. To be honest I never even noticed he wasn't wearing one, but would you give out some safety advice in a similar situation?

I think a polite: " Oh don't you bother with a PFD?" would not go amiss.
A tale about a 'friend' who got tipped out and drifted from his kayak and was only saved because his PFD kept him afloat until he radio'd the RNLI, would be appropriate.
A little white lie might just hit a nerve.

Sorry Jessica but if you rely on a 'pdf' to keep you a float rather than a pfd then you are sunk my dear..
