Many of us i know have managed to wipe out a fair bit of electronic equipment in one form or another since kayak fishing in our area has been evolving - it has been an expensive process for some in trying to finally find appropriate gear within a reasonable budget that we can go out with on our kayak and that will stand the environment that we operate in and its excesses. This is just a short report on a camera i bought about 6 months ago in response to my last camera being killed on an outing and the one before that. I know a few have this camera and i hope they have been as satisfied with it as i have - i thought a report may be usefull to anyone considering a new camera for use on a kayak and in a seawater environment amongst other things.
The Pentax Optio WPi
6.0 megapixels
3 X optical zoom
2" LCD features low reflection glare technology to aid easy-view use in outdoor enviremonments.
High speed photowork for sport or action shots.
IP58 rated for dust and waterproof protection.
Apart from a whole host of the usual features you would expect to find on a digital camera costing between £150-200 - there are a couple of others that i find quite usefull on this a relatively low cost waterproof camera.
As well as video with sound – you can make sound files alone – stills with sound 10 secs before shot and 10 seconds after.
All in all after seeing the end of a camera or two before it i have put this one through its paces over many months- soaking for hours in its salt water drenched pack on my boat, wiping lug, ragworm and any amount of fishbiat remnants from its lens and buttons and all over the thing - throwing it around- anyone who knows me will know that a day out on my kayak with me will be a test of anything - this camera has been through as much as any would be expected to take- its has performed faultlessly- i even gave it an extra hour in our coldwater fish tank at home.
After it came out of the tank - i took this picture immediately.
Not bad after lying in water for an hour- it has proven 100% waterproof since i have had it.
It has been left in its saltwater damp pouch for days in my van before being found and then rinsed and dried and after months of this treatment it looks like new- there is not the slightest evidence of corrosion on the device that I can see.
I have done my best to kill it and failed- hence this report - it may not be the best camera in the world- i paid around £165.00 for it- but it has put up with all the mistreatment i could give it - and it is still in top working order today- i give it a strong recommendation- a big Yeh.
