Personally nearly having been capsized last year in the Swellies bit of the Straits by the wake of a RIB being 'driven' by a complete knobhead too close to the shore, I tend to class them with jet ski's as a pestilence upon the water. There's a time and a place to open up the engines on these things, preferably about 2 miles away from anyone else holding a paddle.

The reason why the rib was close to shore in the swellies which will be approaching from past Menai to Britannia bridge is because that is where the safe passage channel is especially at low water. Now as you know there are kn*b heads in all walks of life even on kayaks as well as power boats. Now the one on the video I can assure you that there was no other boats or kayaks around apart from ribs during the making of that film.

Quite right Kerny..they are there in all walks of life.
However my friends and I were going with the flow on a big spring tide that day with plenty of water under us, and already feeling a bit 'nervous' and the lads in the rib [no pfd's, dressed in tshirts and jeans] were laughing at us when they went past our boats. We've also been buzzed by jetskis on the Straits on the big open bit by Nelsons column, who actually went round and round us to demonstrate their 'skill' at handling their craft causing a lot of distress to a novice, and on one occasion at New Brighton a policeman actually 'had a word' with a jetskier who had been buzzing us, as one of our group was a bobby who called for assistance!
Last year a kayaker was seriously injured down south when the propellor from a rib sliced through his legs after he had to deliberately capsize his boat. The people in the rib were [unbelievably] operating a radio controlled boat, and not keeping a watch..
I'm sorry if this sounds like a bit of a rant, and from my experience around Anglesey and the Lleyn, most ribs especially fishing rigged ones piloted by experienced skippers are very courteous to us in the little boats, but my bad experiences with jetskis far outweigh the good ones. If you want to see the jetski/powerboat mob at their worst try paddling around Abersoch any summer weekend!

Jetskiis are personally not my cup of tea, but most of them that do use them have taken the time to attend the correct courses and gain a basic qualification to operate there craft and they do act responsibly. But it is the few that give them a bad name, it's the same with power boats, cars, kayaks, motorbikes etc, ect, and the majority of people know this, but for you to put up this comment!! "I tend to class them with jetskiis as pestilence upon the water" I take that as a personal attack to my thread and it sounds to me, that you think you are the only kayaker who should be out there on the water. As for Abersoch I agree with you. I wouldn't even go out there on a yak, to many champagne palaces and idiots all in the same place.

Kerny I'm sorry for that, I meant no offence; as I said later the experienced and professional rib pilots are great, and it is the few idiots who spoil things for everyone else. However I do think that new purchasers of jetskis should be made to do a safety course, like all motor bike riders have to do. A big fast boat is a much bigger investment and I guess most people who buy them do commit to the VHF and inshore nav/day skipper courses, but I've see too many lads [mainly] in small powerboats/ribs showing off or doing stupid things at Trearrdur, Rhosneigr and Abersoch, even riding up onto the beach at Llanbedrog when it was crowded.

No probs mate, my boat is a black rib called Imogen, if you see me on the straits give us a wave and I will slowly approach you and invite you aboard for a brew. ;D
