how can you tell if a sib is pvc or hypolon by just looking at it is there an obvious difference between the 2

In a word Terry-------------no although some have a different feel to them and the weight of the Rubber is also heavier than PVC.
Some have info on the I.D. plate fitted to the transom but to be honest unless you buy one of the top makes, they will be PVC and the price will reflect the use of Hypalon or Stronglan or Duralon etc.
