The 30th of December was a good day to close my 2014 kayak fishing year on.
A spontaneous event was arranged on a brand new water for kayak fishing. Many wanted to come but sadly could not make it. However on a very cold and frosty morning with many miles travelled by some David Morris , Mark Radcliffe . Dizzy fish Harris , Ian Pickering Dane Wood and I prepared to launch.
The air was still, the sky clear and the water calm a typical Winter's morning. We were full of anticipation. We were all looking forward to the challenge of the specimen pike and perch this water holds.
The three mile paddle to the reputed hot spot commenced along with all the chat and banter that accompanies these days. .
Well we all worked very hard casting lures, jigs and drop shots along with various dead baits. We covered a lot of water and struggled. Most of us caught the odd fish, I was lucky enough to get a 12oz perch
Dane had a small pike. Numerous trout were also caught.
The thing I reflect on most though was not the amount of fish caught or the kayaks we paddle or teams we represent, I have deliberately not mentioned brands as on a day like this that is all irrelevant. Today was about six friends getting together filled with a love of the sport of fishing from a kayak. Friends enjoying shared experiences and passing on knowledge to help each other catch fish.
After all isn't that what our sport is all about? Not us as individuals or teams but ambassadors helping our peers new and old to enjoy our passion safely and helping them to catch fish.
It was great day with great friends and it ended in the way all such days should.....a pint of Doom Bar in a country pub with a wood fire.
Thank you to David, Dizzy, Ian, Mark and Dane for helping me close my 2014 so pleasantly.
Terry
