Last year my normal 'school night' mark was over an hours drive into wales and the launch was over boulders meaning it was a two man job to get afloat. It just wasn't ideal for making the most of a beautiful summers evening and needing two people to launch ment that plans had to be made in advance. I decided this year that I'd try and break away from the familiar marks that almost guarantee me success in order to find a few local one man launches so I can capitalize on early finishes when conditions where good.
I decided my first port of call should be Hall Road a shallow surf beach giving way to the River Merseys Shipping channel, pretty much everything to be caught in the Mersey passes through here so there's a lot of species to go at. I've launched here a few times but only to mess about in the surf. I've also done a bit of shore fishing here for Bass and Codling and I had acquired a decent amount inside information over the years so by no means was I launching into unknown territory. The launch is straight forward enough around High water but the low water mark is a mile or so down the beach.
I pumped some lugworm to complement the fresh peeler I already had In my bucket before I rigged up the yak. No further time was wasted in getting afloat. The 15mph onshore winds where keen to make my session more interesting. I paddled out to the drop off just past the low water mark and dropped anchor at the bottom and let the wind push me back to over the top of the shelf giving me access to all of the feature. Straight from the off the dabs, whiting and small codling where onto the lugworm with the big crab baits being neglected.
Over slack water the fish eased off and not a lot going on, the crab rod had a little rattle and I wound down and lifted the rod, but the tip didn't move, a series of conger like thrashes later and I was allowed to reel in minus a hook and few inches of 30lb flouro :/
I had a few more dabs and whiting before the wind really picked up and the sky turned grey. I had out stayed my welcome and it was time to go.
