Done and dusted by 11 am on Wednesday , I found myself trying to make
a decision. Tywyn trip or treat myself to a well earned rest and chill ?
It's a three hour drive to Tywyn, with roadworks, traffic etc. but the
sun was shining, there was a bit of a breeze but I've had little chance
to catch a Tope this year and besides I can always target the Bass ?
I sat back and decided not to bother and treat myself to that well earned
rest and chill. Bollocks !- I stood up again, I'm not letting a day like
this pass me by.
After rushing around getting everything together, and a three hour drive behind
the slowest lorries on earth, I was finally paddling down the Dysynni at
high tide with a beautiful blue ocean opening up invitingly
It was glorious but a bit more lumpy than I expected so I stayed close in
and plug fished for Bass, the Tope can wait until it calms down a bit - I
always play it very safe when on my own - wimp !
The bass were not playing at all but eventually the floating minnow was
hammered. Don't you love that moment when a bass hits !
A nice silver comes to the yak side.
It went quiet again and I was starting to think Tope, when I caught a movement
in the corner of my eye.
Dolphin ! and it was coming my way - No, THEY were coming my way !
They came and joined me fishing the reef for half an hour - What a privilege !
I've seen Dolphin before but nothing like this they were popping up and blowing
all around me, maybe nine or ten and some were huge ! I took some video on my
compact camera and some of the pics are stills from this , sorry about the quality.
They were very close , virtually under the kayak - awesome !
Even a mother and young one ! Just beautiful !
They may have been hunting sea trout , though there was a shoal of
good sized mullet in the river mouth.
As quick as they had appeared , they were gone - specks disappearing into
the ocean horizon. I was speechless , it was a half hour encounter that I will never
forget. I say speechless but while they were with me , I found myself
talking to them - big softie that I am !
I tried for a tope but only for a couple of hours in
lovely calm conditions as evening approached but alas only caught a
small Huss and a dogfish.
When it started to swell up over the reef,
I decided to try for a bass again, close in - wimp !
My 10 gram rod was soon doubled over again and this was a good one.
What a fight ! Most of my bass go back but this one came home with me.
With the prospect of a three hour drive ahead and the sun getting low
It was back to the river.
What a day it had been ( even if a short one ) the beauty of the
place, the kayak fishing ....
The Dolphin encounter , especially the mother and young one.
I will teasure this day , it brought joy to my heart, I smiled all
the way home. It was still there when I dragged myself out of bed
and off to work next morning.
So it was Tywyn trip AND treat - you can have your cake and eat it.
Stay safe all and enjoy your kayak fishing
