Nice one David......
It is possible that your engine could be uprated to an 8hp but it depends on the manufacturer. Many engines use the same block and perhaps the change of a carb or electronic chip can release extra power. For example, I have a still waters engine, a 2.5hp Mercury which can be up rated to 3.5hp by changing the carb which would cost approx £120.00.
It really depends on your engine maker as to which configuration they have used. It may well be the case that they use the same block for the 4, 5 and 6hp engines in which case it could not be up rated to 8hp however if they use the same block for 6 and 8hp, I am certain there will be an up grade kit available.
Have a look on the internet or speak to a good marine engineer near you. If you want to ask a few over the phone, try Selby Marine Services, Higham Marine in St Helens Manchester or MJ Marine over in my neck of the woods on 01469 532231.
Make sure you have all the details to hand and possibly the engine number as things change in spec so if you can give enough information, you will get an answer but you may find it too expensive and better off exchanging for a different engine. Worth a phone call or two.
Phil
