Went out with my new best mate Scoot to this reef on Sunday. It's 2.2 mile off Irvine beech, we had to keep it local cause i smashed my van and had a rental. We fired mine on to his car and set off for the 200 yrd drive down the harbour. I may as well have tied it on with elastic bands . Half way down and the boat was hanging off the side of the car ;D. We got there though and got sorted out amongst the usuall interested folk around. The car park sits between the mouth of the river Irvine and the beech so has usually a few people about whatever the weather. You can use the slip further up the river a bit but the mouth of the river is a bit choppy most of the time so your better off going for the drag through the 50yrds of soft sand beech side. It's ok on the way out, but when you can back in it's a killer.
We trawled out with dropped feathers and weren't long in hooking in to the makarel. We were intending in stocking up for the winter with makarel but we collected enough for bait and moved on to the reef. We pulled our rods up incase we hooked into the lobster bouys about rope, They would be up at the reef any how.
First fish was a doggie. Not so much the pain in the axse about here with numbers so i was quite happy. I did have to cut my line and leave the hook in it though, it had swallowed the bait a fair bit. The first i've had to do that and with me using stainless hooks wondered if it would be allright. A bit more on the stainless hooks, i think thats only about 5, 4 O's lost, no 8 O's and none of the 1 O's in about, 6 months? so not too bad.
I was in next again with a small ling.
Probably not even a couple of lbs and i caught another one that size later. You don't usually see them under 3-4lbs. I was looking for a bigger one to take for my mates dad who prefers them to cod but no luck. I would say i prefer them myself, sport wise, to cod.
I was starting to get a bit worried about new friend, he was sitting that slouched way with his head down and i could swear i saw tears dripping into the flat calm. The blood shot eyes and everything ;D
He wasn't that long till he was in, a cod of about 3lb. I'm glad he got it cause he only caught makarel the last time we were out, that was my mark again. He's picking the next outing, Loch Awe for pike i think.
I had 4 pollock spinning the bottom of the reef and i caught my first cod on a lure.
We had been out in the water 6 hrs. The clouds started to take on the signs of thunder so we decided to high tale it. Surprisingly hard paddle back with still no breath of wind. Caught loads of fish with my new spinning rod, starting to really enjoy my new paddle ( Canadian, Nimbus Kiska, full carbon ?? ) (( £35 out the tackle shop in Ardwell ;D )). Come to think of it, my other kayaking friend Ian, ( Rapala ) was also sitting that slouched way with the blood shot eyes when the boy told him there was only one of them ;D ;D ;D. Will pm u nearer the Loch Awe Ian )).
All in all, a great break from the wind and rain.
