Kev Hambo and I went to Tywyn reef on Saturday. We launched by the bridge on the river. We had to guide the yaks through the rocks in some places, but this was no real hassle. Having launched in the past by the town and paddled to the reef and now having launched in the river; the river is by far the better option. Even after having to get off the yaks to guide them past the rocks, it still worked out an hour quicker than paddling from the town. When we got out, the sea was nearly calm. There were bass topping out everywhere, chasing fry. I failed to land 4 before I landed this one. I then landed another slightly bigger one and a small schoolie. Kev also had two about the same size as mine. We took them on surface lures. Great fun. They were the first bass both Kev and I have ever caught (including from the shore). To say we were chuffed is an understatement. We caught them all in the first hour and thought “this is going to be a brilliant day!” Then the wind got up making surface lures a no go Diving lures were getting covered in weed, of which there was absolutely loads drifting through; mainly the bright green stringy stuff. Patrick and Sponge Bob turned up later that day. We left soon after, having caught nothing after the breeze picked up. Still we got our first Bass Happy days. John

Nice one John - I will be heading down there to target the bass and bream in the next few weeks. Is there easy parking by the bridge or is there limited space?

Stacks of parking Steve.
There's a gate at the very end of the road near the bridge; which apparently is normally padlocked. However it was unlocked when we went. We were really tempted to drive the cars under the bridge and across the dirt tracks to the beach itself. We were just a little concerned that someone may padlock the gate, after we'd gone through; leaving us stuck there. I guess a taking portable angle grinder is always an option. ;D
I may well risk it next time if the gate isn't locked. I have looked at an aerial view web site (similar to google earth); which clearly show cars parked right by the river entrance on the beach. So it is possible.
Having said that, going down the river from the bridge wasn't a problem. But we did catch the tide right, so there was enough water in the river. John
