When lifting the kayak onto a 4*4, people carrier or a van it is sometimes quite hard and after a day paddling the last thing you want to do is to lift your yak above your head to slide it onto your roof bars. I used to use a piece of old carpet wedged into the seal of the door but the dragging motion always pulled it out and the kayak was left rubbing the top of the door/roof. I know there are lots of kayak loading equipment that you can purchase. I did a little research of my own on, I found that the US web sites were better. With this new knowledge an a penciled sketch I decided to manufacture my own loading roller. The rollers that you can buy are between £60 and £150 and are usually imported from the states. I purchased all the parts for under £15, tinkered in the garage for a few nights and hey presto a lightweight kayak loading roller. It can either attach to your window or the top of the roof. I know there are lots of engineers (like me) on this site that will be able to manufacture one of these quite easily. If you want to make one and need any tips just PM me.

Nice job, how have you bolted the frame to the cups without compromising the suction?

Terry, The vacuum is caused by the flat rubber forming a concave action, so I used 6mm bolts drilled through the plastic frame. This did not interfere with the suction. The double suction handle can lift 100kg dead weight so sliding the kayak over the roller is easy. Ill bring it to a meet so you can try it out.

I like that Jaan, it's such a simple yet effective solution but more importantly it didn't cost a fortune to make.
