Dear Consultee,
Consultation on a Strategy for Marine Protected Areas in Wales: Protecting Welsh
Seas
You are invited to comment on the draft strategy for marine protected areas in Wales,
‘Protecting Welsh Seas’. The Welsh Assembly Government’s vision for the marine
environment in Wales is for it to be valued, understood and respected for what it contains
and provides. We want our seas to be clean, support vibrant economies and healthy
functioning ecosystems that are biologically diverse, productive and resilient, while being
sensibly used and responsibly managed. We believe that a coherent and well managed
suite of marine protected areas is key to delivering our vision.
The draft strategy outlines how the Welsh Assembly Government intends to enhance the
existing suite of protected sites in Wales and contribute towards the development of a UK
wide network of marine protected areas.
The Marine and Coastal Access Bill that was introduced to Parliament in December 2008,
will provide the framework for new site protection measures based on the designation of
marine conservation zones. These new site designations, together with European marine
