For a standard van type camper - or a van for that matter - kari-tec (or kari-tek is it?) in Scotland do roof racks for kayaks that have a sliding section which drops down over the side of the vehicle - load the kayak(s) onto the rack while it is hanging off the side, then heft the lot up and over on their roller system - and lock into place on the roof with a couple of pins - quite expensive, but i have seen it and it works well - even on a tall Sprinter.

Stargaizers idea is not too far from the racks used by SKY tv engineers to fit the ladders to the top of their bigger vans. The rack hinges at the back, tips up from front to back so the ladders stand at the back of the van at an angle. Have a look at one of their vans i'm sure the idea can be adapted.

Inside for me - but it's a tight fit, VW transporter high top, the J bars will support a surf board (on it when I got it), but I wouldn't trust them to take the weight of a yak. Downside is, when you are travelling, any stop means the yak has to come out to get any advantage of the benefits of the camper! Boil a cup a tea - yak out Wot's in the fridge - yak out Under that seat - yak out Can you reach that cupboard....etc BTW - make sure you can achieve all the gears before setting off...yak nudged up with elbow Won't be changing it though don't need much back there until the yak is out!! ;D
